History of Society of Colorectal Surgeons, Singapore (SCRS)

The Society of Colorectal Surgeons was set up in 2003 by a group of pioneer colorectal surgeons in Singapore in response to a growing need for specialised support and collaboration among colorectal surgeons within Singapore. The society's early mission was to foster excellence in colorectal surgery, promote advanced medical training, and develop the field through dedicated research initiatives and public awareness campaigns.

Over the years, SCRS has significantly contributed to advancing the knowledge and skills of colorectal surgeons in Singapore. Through regular professional development activities, such as seminars, workshops, and symposiums, the society has provided a crucial platform for local surgeons to share case studies, discuss innovative techniques, and collaborate on best practices. SCRS has also hosted a number of high-profile international conferences, drawing participants from around the world and positioning Singapore as a center of expertise in colorectal surgery.

One of the society’s notable focuses has been on the early detection and management of colorectal cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Singapore. Through various collaborations, SCRS has worked diligently to raise public awareness on prevention, screening, and treatment options for colorectal diseases.
Public health campaigns, informational sessions, and advocacy have been central to its mission, aiming to educate Singaporeans on the importance of early diagnosis.

As part of its dedication to advancing colorectal medicine, SCRS has also supported cutting-edge research, with members frequently publishing studies on surgical innovations, patient care, and disease prevention. The society’s commitment to research has not only benefited patient outcomes in Singapore but has also contributed to the global body of knowledge in colorectal medicine.

Today, SCRS continues to serve as a professional home for colorectal surgeons, providing them with the resources and network needed to advance their careers and contribute to the well-being of their patients.
